Over fifty years ago, South Australia became a national leader by passing laws to end dangerous backyard abortions and allow doctors to provide safe, lawful abortion care in hospitals. Over fifty years ago, South Australia became a national leader by passing laws to end dangerous backyard abortions and allow doctors to provide safe, lawful abortion care in hospitals. In 2021, our state modernised those laws again - removing abortion from the criminal code entirely and regulating it through health legislation, clinical standards, and professional ethics.
These reforms ensure that abortion is safe, legal, and compassionate healthcare – guided by medical evidence and individual circumstance, not by politics or religion.
But these hard-won rights are increasingly under threat. Twice in one-year, conservative politicians (Ben Hood MLC and Sarah Game MLC) both purportedly acting at the behest of Professor Joanna Howe, have sought to chip away at the principle that abortion and pregnancy management are matters of health care – not ideology.
Professor Howe has openly declared her goal is to: "make abortion unthinkable" in South Australia. She won’t stop.
But we won’t go back.
We cannot allow ideology to override compassion, evidence, or the expertise of medical professionals. South Australia’s laws already have strict safeguards and uphold the highest medical standards. They protect the dignity of people making deeply personal medical decisions with their doctors free from interference by nutty law professors or the politicians they encourage to do their bidding in controlling reproductive choices.
Join us in calling on the South Australian Parliament to stand firm and defend our abortion laws. Let’s protect compassion, choice, and healthcare for all.
