Defend South Australia’s Abortion Laws

Over fifty years ago, South Australia became a national leader by passing laws to end dangerous backyard abortions and allow doctors to provide safe, lawful abortion care in hospitals. In 2021, our state modernised those laws again - removing abortion from the criminal code entirely and regulating it through health legislation, clinical standards, and professional ethics.

These reforms ensure that abortion is safe, legal, and compassionate healthcareguided by medical evidence and individual circumstance, not by politics or religion.

But these hard-won rights are increasingly under threat. Twice in one-year, conservative politicians (Ben Hood MLC and Sarah Game MLC) both purportedly acting at the behest of Professor Joanna Howe, have sought to chip away at the principle that abortion and pregnancy management are matters of health care – not ideology

Professor Howe has openly declared her goal is to: "make abortion unthinkable" in South Australia. She won’t stop.

But we won’t go back.

We cannot allow ideology to override compassion, evidence, or the expertise of medical professionals. South Australia’s laws already have strict safeguards and uphold the highest medical standards. They protect the dignity of people making deeply personal medical decisions with their doctors free from interference by nutty law professors or the politicians they encourage to do their bidding in controlling reproductive choices.

Join us in calling on the South Australian Parliament to stand firm and defend our abortion laws. Let’s protect compassion, choice, and healthcare for all.

To: Members of the South Australian Parliament

We, the undersigned, call on all Members of the South Australian Parliament to defend and uphold South Australia’s current abortion legislation - laws that ensure reproductive healthcare is safe, legal, and evidence-based.

In 2021, Parliament passed reforms that modernised abortion access after decades of advocacy and expert consultation. These laws protect the right of every person to make private medical decisions in partnership with their doctors, nurses and health care teams – free from political interference.

Recent attempts by Ben Hood MLC and Sarah Game MLC to amend or repeal these laws threaten to undo that progress. Their proposals seek to reintroduce ideological barriers to care, remove vital mental-health protections, place restrictions on the ability of medical professionals to intervene early to save their patients from complications and harm-and will serve to elevate the opinions of politicians over the proper and thoughtful provision of treatment of patients by their doctors.

South Australia’s existing laws already include strict medical safeguards and professional oversight. They reflect compassion, reason, and trust in medical expertise, not ideology.

We therefore call on the Parliament to:

  • Reject all attempts to weaken or repeal South Australia’s abortion laws.

  • Uphold evidence-based, compassionate reproductive healthcare.

  • Protect every South Australian’s right to make private medical decisions free from political or religious interference.

South Australians fought hard for these rights. We cannot and will not go backwards.
